Basalt is a type of volcanic rock formed from rapidly cooling lava. Most volcanic rock in the world is basalt.
When basalt cools especially quickly, the rock contracts slightly as it cools. This causes basalt to often fracture into narrow columns that are roughly hexagonal in general. These columns famously make up landmarks such as the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Island and several other geological features around the world.
Our columns are naturally and sustainably harvested from columnar basalt formations. Our stone is cut to height but otherwise left to its original appearance. This lends each column a distinctive look that stands out amongst many of our other rocks.
