Our Story
House of Rocks opened in the late 1970s as an unassuming fossil shop in Kansas City, but our story really began in 1984, when we began specializing in natural rock and stone.
Over the years, we’ve expanded our product selection and grown into one of the largest stone suppliers in Kansas City, with millions of tons of rock sold locally and nationwide. Frequently Asked Questions
Simply stop by our office to discuss your project or place an order for pickup or delivery. We sell rock in any amount from just a few rocks, a few bags of our in-stock 50 lb. bags of landscape rock, or bulk amounts. We sell most of our rock by weight (pounds or tons) using state-certified scales. You can also purchase smaller hand-picked quantities and pay per pound for most of our landscape rock offerings.
You can use our handy calculator to get a basic estimate of how much you might need, give us a call 913-432-5990, or send us an email to discuss your project. Most of the time, you simply want to take the length x width (in feet) of the area to get square footage. You will then divide that number by the amount of square feet per ton the rock covers. The coverage of each rock will be different depending on size and the depth you want to go. Larger rock covers less area, while smaller rock covers more. We are here to help!
We can load bags of rock into any vehicle. For bulk items, you will need to bring an open-bed pickup truck, flatbed, or open-bed trailer that we can access via machinery to dump or place the order into your vehicle. If the order doesn’t fit, you can schedule convenient delivery services with us six days per week.
We do not install. We are a material provider and offer curbside delivery service only. For projects requiring design and/or installers, we can provide you with landscape, interior design, and masonry companies to assist in the use of durable and elegant natural stone in your project.
All returns must have the original receipt dated within the last 60 days and will be returned less a 20% re-stock fee. Returns must be unopened (bagged items) and in condition for re-sale for other items. House of Rocks reserves the right to refuse returns at our discretion. Thin Veneer is non-returnable item. Palletized items that need to be picked up will incur a delivery charge. Pickup items must be in condition for transport (wrapped and secured) to be picked up.

Understanding Natural Variation
Because rock is a natural product, variation is an inherent and desirable trait, not a flaw. You should expect differences in:
- Color: Hues can vary from piece to piece and pallet to pallet, even when quarried from the same location. We do our best to show the true colors, textures, and shapes of our stone in photos, samples, and in person at our showroom. As a natural product, every piece is unique, and inherent variation in color and character should be expected.
- Size & Shape: The dimensions and forms of the stones will naturally differ. For natural stone veneer, custom ordering is available for specific color range, size, sawn sides, custom heights & lengths, tumbled ends
- Texture & Markings: Expect to see mineral deposits, veining, or fossilized impressions. These features contribute to the stone’s unique story and beauty.
Best Practices for Your Project
To get the best results and a cohesive look, follow these two crucial tips:
- Rock is dirty. All decorative gravel will have some dirt, silt, and fines from the natural crushing or dredging process. This is normal and unavoidable. Once installed, a few rains or a gentle rinse will gradually wash the stone clean — patience pays off as the true color and texture emerge.
- Buy It All at Once. If possible, purchase all the stone needed for your entire project at the same time. This helps ensure the rock comes from the same general quarry batch, minimizing extreme differences in color and character between shipments.
- Mix from Multiple Pallets. When installing, do not use one pallet of stone completely before starting the next. Instead, have your installer pull stones from several different pallets simultaneously. This blends the natural, subtle variations across the entire project, creating a beautiful, harmonious finish and avoiding noticeable “patches” of different colors or textures.
- Estimates – Any quantity estimates we provide are based on the information and measurements given by the customer. Natural variation in stone may increase or decrease estimated coverages. As a materials supplier, we do not offer formal estimation, design, or jobsite services, but we are happy to refer you to qualified professionals to assist in these areas.
